What is hCG?

HCG or Human chorionic gonadotropin, is a peptide hormone produced by the developing embryo and placenta of pregnant women. It is produced immediately after fertilization. It is almost identical to luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and thyroid-stimulating hormone. This similarity gives HCG its beneficial effects like the ability to continue production of estrogens and progestogens during pregnancy.

How is it made?

HCG is manufactured in two ways: It can be extracted from the urine of pregnant women, because its form remains unchanged when passing through the kidneys. It can also be produced using a method known as genetic recombination. Urinary and recombinant HCG are identical and both are equally effective.

What does it do?

It cannot be sufficiently emphasized that HCG is not a sex hormone. It regulates menstruation and facilitates conception, but it is not capable of virilizing a woman or feminizing a man. It will not make men grow breasts or give women facial hair, or lower their voice. It has no direct action on any endocrine gland. The only sexual change it can bring about is an improvement of a pre-existing condition, but never stimulation beyond normal.

How is it used?

It is clinically used to induce ovulation in women as part of fertility treatment. In men, it stimulates the production of testosterone in the testes and can be used as part of androgen replacement therapy for those with hypogonadism or andropause (male menopause).

Perhaps the most exciting use for hCG is in weight loss treatment. hCG along with a low-calorie diet has tremendous potential to burn and remove fat in a person’s body. It does this by programming the hypothalamus to mobilize and consume abnormal and excessive fat deposits.

How do I take it?

HCG comes in lyophilized (freeze-dried) powder form in either vials or ampules. HCG must be reconstituted (mixed) with a diluent. For use in fertility treatment where large amounts of HCG are given at once, sterile water with sodium chloride is most often used. For use in a weight loss program where dosages are typically much less and require daily injections, bacteriostatic water is used. This is done to avoid bacterial growth in the solution for longer term use and storage.

Low-dose HCG injections are extremely effective in the range of 125 – 200 IU per day. In combination with a 500 calorie a day diet, composed mostly of high-protein and low-carbohydrates and fat, wonderful results can be expected. Loss of fat without the adverse effects associated with a restrictive diet are normally observed. When dosed correctly, no hunger should be experienced, no loss of energy or fatigue, and no loss of lean muscle tissue.

What are the side effects?

HCG is repeatedly viewed as a miracle drug, and therefore “too good to be true”.  For this reason it is sometimes associated as having strong negative side effects by those who are misinformed. Like everything, HCG has side effects but these come from the diet rather than the HCG itself. People will sometimes get headaches and leg cramps for the first couple of days of starting the program. Both effects stem from the body detoxifying itself from its previous diet. During detoxification, all the bad food that has been stored in the fat is being broken down, consumed and expelled. During this phase, the body continually feeds off of this stored fat which contains all the bad chemical, and give rise to headaches. Fortunately, these side effects usually only last a day or two.

The other commonly noted side effect while on the program are leg cramps. This is caused from a lack of potassium as it is generally inadvisable to eat bananas and other potassium-rich foods while on the diet. In order to remedy this, supplementation of simple potassium tablets have been implemented and the problems disappear entirely.
